Once upon a time, Breckenridge was known as Colorados Kingdom. In fact, it wasnt until 1936 that Breckenridge was officially recognized. In true Breckenridge style, during Kingdom Days residents choose to celebrate their towns historically laden past with a sort of street fair. The year 2007 marked the first inaugural Kingdom Days events, but the events have proven to be wildly popular with both tourist and locals alike. Historic Breckenridge meant brothels, saloons, gun slinging cowboys, and mining. Kingdom day aims as focusing on Breckenridges history as a community, as well as its gold mining past in order to bring a certain awareness of the towns history to those that may be passing through. Breckenridge kicks of its Kingdom Days even with a race that is certainly reminiscent of the past, but also extremely out of the ordinary. The first race of this festive two day event is none other than the Outhouse Race. Those that wish to race are invited to come up with their own mode of outhouse transportation and race alongside others in order to pull their vehicle across the finish line. Of course, Kingdom Days has a lot more to offer in the way of old time food, drink, dancing, and good old Breckenridge fun. No matter what season is upon us, Breckenridge has found a way to celebrate throughout the town the whole year through. This town is all about playtime, so grab a hold of your pistols and head to Breckenridges Kingdom days set to take place each June in order to celebrate this towns rugged past.

Before you twist your tongue in an attempt to say the name of this festival properly, let me clear it up for you. The Ullr festival (ooh-ler) is a great way to pipe some warmth into your cheeks during the cold winter months. The festival happens from January 6th 11th and it is the best way to best the winter frost. Breckenridge tends to come alive during the season when most other villages and cities are deep in the midst of cold temperatures and dark hours. This town was meant for snow, and it embraces everything that the winter has to offer Ullr, is no exception. In case you are wondering, Ullr is the mythical Norse God of Snow. This son of Thor himself so loved the cold winter months that he spent his time skating and skiing around the forests. You might think of Ullr as a sort of Norse jester gliding around throughout the towns playing tricks and wreaking havoc with the children and townspeople, but it was all in good fun. Legend has it that Ullr stumbled upon Breckenridge one snowy eve and could find no other suitable place to play, so he decided to cover the Breckenridge grounds with the best snow in the nation each year in order to continue his gleeful wintry cheer. Breckenridgers, and those who visit the town each ski season, pay tribute to Ullr by throwing a large street party chock full of fun winter events. Festivities include the International Snow Sculpture Championships, the Ullr Parade, the Ullr Bonfire, the Ullr Ball, the Ullr King and Queen, the Ullympics, and many more events that the entire family will enjoy. If this sounds like your cup of tea (or hot chocolate) you will definitely not want to miss this. Although the fall is just beginning, winter is fast approaching and Ullr is certain to return to Breckenridge once again for his legendary ride and heavenly fistfuls of glorious snow.

There is no better way to kick off the fall season than with a good, old-fashioned, Oktoberfest. Breckenridge means fun all year long, and this town sure knows how to throw a hearty Oktoberfest party. The festival is annual and begins on September 14th carrying on until the 16th, and begins with the annual Brewmasters Dinner. The Brewmasters Dinner is the perfect way to begin this traditional German festival, as those that participate will enjoy a multi-course dinner with of course Paulner Bier. The cuisine usually consists of traditional fare coupled with a special Breckenridge twist that visitors should not miss. The rest of the events following the Brewmasters Dinner consist largely of a street fair that is located on Breckenridges main street beginning with the tapping of the official keg. Of course, live Austrian music, sidewalks full of food and drink, dancers, kids rides, and many other events are scheduled to take place throughout the street. Tickets are free, but the brew is priced according to half liter or one liter steins ($15 & $20). If you happen to be arriving in town just in time for this event, you may benefit from taking a peek at special lodging packages that will include Oktoberfest tickets and other information. This event is suitable for adults and kids alike, but no pets are allowed on the main street. The smells and sounds of fall are upon us, so take advantage of all this colorful season has to offer before the snow starts to fly.

Breckenridge is a great spot for skiing and to just get away from it all. But Breckenridge can also be an exciting place with lots of events year-round. One of the coolest events- literally, is Budweiser Select International Snow Sculpture Championships. This event is held each January. The 28th edition will be from June 5th to the 8th in 2008. Audiences at the festival have had a chance to meet many actors and directors over the years, and of course view Hollywoods latest releases. Some films to show at the Breckenridge Film Festival include Lost in Translation, American Beauty, and Frida among many others. Another great time to be in Breckenridge is for the Fourth of July. There is always plenty of entertainment and overall family fun. There is a parade, fireworks, music, kids activities, and much more. Things start with a 10k trail run at 8:30 a.m. Then there is the Fourth of July parade that starts at 11 a.m. on Main Street.
