The Speakeasy

You may think that a speakeasy is a thing of the past a place where bootleggers and thrill seekers would get their Saturday night kicks, but Breckenridge has another notion of what a Speakeasy should be all about. If you ask around town for directions to The Speakeasy, you will be pointed in the direction of popcorn and movie stars, not towards the neighborhood bar. The Speakeasy is the local Breckenridge movie theatre in fact, its the only game in town and its the one that locals prefer.

The Speakeasy is run by two guys (Mike and Guy) who made Breckenridge their home many years ago. Mike found his way to the small town after leave the city lights of New York, and Guy came from his native Israel in order to settle in for a few dollars and some big screen excitement. You may be surprised at the selection of movies that Mike and Guy choose to show. Not only do they hand pick each movie that is shown, movies range from independent films to blockbusters alike, and you never know just what may crawl onto the screen during each summer session.

The Speakeasy is closed during the winter months, so if you plan on visiting this one of a kind theatre, you will have to enjoy all that Breckenridge has to offer during the summertime. Oh yeah, dont worry if you think that the popcorn boy bares a strong resemblance to the ticket taker Mike and Guy do everything from running the projector to selling the popcorn. These two entrepreneurs also lend a helping hand to local artists as new works are showcased within the theatre each month, so feel free to browse around and buy a souvenir or two. If you are tired of the tourist scene, visit The Speakeasy for a relaxed night out amongst the locals.
